This is a 6-month seasonal position.
Applicants from the Bozeman, Billings, Missoula, Great Falls and Helena areas will be considered.
This position requires 75%-80% travel.

Job Overview:
The Apiary Technician position assists the State Entomologist in performing duties within the apiary program.
The incumbent will work with bees, conduct apiary inspections, obtain survey samples, interpret, and communicate laws and rules under the direction of the State Entomologist.
As the Apiary Technician, you will:
Conduct apiary inspections and investigations.
Assist with apiary database, updating apiary registrations, payments, site conflicts, and verification of GPS Coordinates.
Generate certificates and reports.
Follow all standard operating procedures for the state apiary program.
Obtain National Honeybee Survey samples.
Communicate with beekeeping industry concerning quarantines, pest and disease information, registration issues, bee biology and policy changes.
Provide guidance to commercial and hobbyist beekeepers regarding site registrations, apiary laws and rules.
Physical and Environmental Demands:
Travel across Montana to perform work up to 80% of the time.
Multiple overnight stays will be required.
Most of the work will be in harsh conditions including working with beehives in adverse weather conditions, varying terrain, and isolated areas.
Exposure to bees and wasps with the high probability of being stung in remote locations requiring self-administering an epinephrine pen and applying basic first aid.
Ability to lift heavy objects (i.
e.
, hive boxes) up to 50 pounds.

Ability to interpret laws and rules for the apiary program.
Ability to accomplish multiple priorities with short deadlines.

Maintains confidentiality, as this position has frequent contact and access to confidential information.
Demonstrates accuracy and thoroughness and monitors own work to ensure quality work output.

Strong Computer skills including MS Office programs and database software.
Minimum
Qualifications:
High-school diploma or equivalent.
Two years of job-related experience.
Certification in required discipline or ability to become certified within given timeframe.
Other combinations of education or experience may be substituted.
Preferred:
Progressing toward or earned degree in entomology, zoology, biology, or similar field of study.
Two (2) years of experience in beekeeping may be substituted for education requirement.

Training Assignment:
This agency may use a training assignment.
Employees in training assignments may be paid below the base pay established by the agency pay rules.
