Paul's and Covenant United Methodist Churches) Job Description - Director of Technology and Sound Summary The Director of Technology and Sound (DTS) is responsible for the sound, technology and recording needs for church services and special events at St.
Paul's UMC.
The person in this position is a key component to the flow of services, and information presented to the congregation.
The person in this position is expected to come to the job with well-developed technology skills in the areas of live sound and video production.
While much of the work done by the DTS is done independently of the other staff, the person in this position is a part of a team that serves the congregation and the ministries of St.
Paul's UMC and must have an ability to work well with other staff, volunteers, and committee leaders.
There are specific job descriptions for each staff member, but overall, it is a team atmosphere that works collectively to create an efficient and cohesive environment for all who interact with St.
Paul's UMC and HUMM.
The person in this position should become familiar with the committees and ministries of St.
Paul's UMC.

A typical week with Sunday service(s) but without internal events (Christmas, Lent, Easter), or external events (weddings and funerals), would be:
Ability to Prep for Sunday Services (to include, but not limited to):
Creating Lower thirds and macros for the ATEM video switcher.
These are the text labels that appear on the bottom of the screen.
There are some new ones each Sunday or event.
Creating YouTube Streams and thumbnail artwork for the livestream.
New YouTube video templates must be created each Sunday or event.
The YouTube stream must be turned off after each session.
Creating all Social media posts/events relating to YouTube streams.
Facebook etc.
Documenting production notes on Camera Op's Sunday bulletin.
As soon as the Sunday bulletin is finalized, the A/V person gets a copy and adds special notes to be used during the live production.
Preparing the MediaShout Stack.
We run the MediaShout software on a laptop to display announcements, hymn lyrics, scripture, special videos etc.
Proofreading slides & fixes (we always rely on a minimum 2 sets of eyes!) Prep digital Sunday bulletin slides with QR codes x2 Create scrolling credits with copyright information for the end of the service Must be able to select proper microphones for a variety of different acoustic instruments.
Direct and produce live YouTube video streams.
Direct audio/video and lighting for all services.
Be present on Sunday mornings to prepare for and breakdown sound/AV for our service at 10am.
Attend weekly staff meeting.
Volunteer scheduling for upcoming events.
We use an online Doodle Poll for tracking volunteer availability for Sunday services, weddings, funerals, concerts etc.
Volunteer recruitment and training.
As volunteers become able to perform duties, they may complete these tasks, with the DTS as the person who oversees and is responsible for the work.
Coordinate between the worship planners (pastors), musicians, etc.
Ability to do equipment upgrades, repairs, ordering & troubleshooting.
Each additional internal event adds approximately 3-4 hours per event between prep and execution.
This is not meant to be a complete list of duties.
As time goes on there may be other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
There is the opportunity to have more hours in a week by working external events that require AV.
Qualifications:
Must be knowledgeable about live production sound mixers, video switchers, computer graphics and computers in general.
Training is available for job applicants that may be weak in one or two of these areas.
The incumbent must be willing and able to learn new technology and techniques on an ongoing basis.
After initial training, the incumbent must be able to work independently under general supervision.
Must have the ability to provide training and mentoring of volunteers who are at various skill levels.
Willingness to go above and beyond to accomplish job duties.
Must have professional level teamwork skills and a strong sense of ethics.
Must be willing to encourage feedback from the congregation and other users of church services and make appropriate technical and procedural changes accordingly.
