The Criminal Justice Services Department works collaboratively with:
Lewis and Clark County District Court; Lewis and Clark County Justice Court; Helena Municipal Court; State of Montana City Court, East Helena Municipality; Helena Police Department; Lewis and Clark County Sheriff's Office; Lewis and Clark County Attorney's Office; Lewis and Clark County Youth Probation Office; Department of Corrections Adult Probation and Parole Bureau; Office of the Public Defender, Region IV.

Working in a fast-paced environment Opportunity to serve on a variety of different committees Professional development and training opportunities Cost of living increases Market adjustments Step based wage increases Paid parental leave Duties Conducts initial assessments of Pretrial Program assigned Defendants upon each Defendants release from the jail; Conducts initial assessments of Misdemeanor Probation offenders as assigned by judicial authority; Continually familiarize themselves with the current population of the jail in order to identify Defendants that might be eligible for the Pretrial Program and conducts a review or assessment of such Defendants; Ensures Defendants and Offenders supervised by the Programs appear in the court of jurisdiction on every occasion required by that court; Helps connect Defendants and Offenders with Court ordered requirements, including, but not limited to, alcohol and drug testing and/or electronic monitoring; Monitors and reports violations of court order requirements; Composes and compiles reports; Attends and testifies in court and before administrative bodies on behalf of Defendants and Offenders; Keeps detailed records of cases, referrals, and contacts with resources on Defendant's and Offender's behalf; Completes required documentation and reporting including creating and maintaining case files and databases; Assists Defendants and Offenders in developing individual goal plans based on Defendant and Offender input, interests and needs; Coordinates Defendant and Offender participation in programs offered by other local agencies including additional job training, educational supports, counseling, housing, medical services and others; Works in partnership with other professionals and agencies in the community to facilitate coordination and information sharing to ensure an integrated approach to goal planning and delivery; Continually gathers and maintains information relating to community resources; Conducts home visits, both random and scheduled, for Defendants and Offenders supervised by the Programs; Identifies potential and actual Defendants and Offenders that may be at risk for self-harm or suicide and intervenes appropriately; Identifies potential and actual Defendants and Offenders that may be a risk for partner and/or family member assault (PFMA); Supervise Defendants and Offenders in a manner consistent with the principles of best and evidence-based practices; Uses arrest authority as necessary; May be assigned as special Officer to specific specialty Courts; May perform other duties as assigned.
Other Duties Attends meetings, conferences and workshops as requested; Conducts crisis intervention as needed; May be assigned as special Officer to specific specialty Courts.

Qualifications The required knowledge, skills, and abilities are typically acquired through a combination of education and experience equivalent to a Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice, Psychology, Criminology, Sociology, Social Services, or relevant field; and at least one (1) years' experience in a correctional, criminal justice, or community provider setting providing services to defendants and/or offenders.
Pretrial and Misdemeanor Probation Officer POST Certified preferred, or within first year of employment, must attend and successfully complete the Montana Law Enforcement Academy (MLEA) Pretrial and Misdemeanor Probation Academy per Montana Code Annotated 46-23-1003, or another academy approved by MLEA, and maintain POST certification; National Association of Pretrial Services Agencies (NAPSA) Certified Pretrial Services Professional (CPSP) standing within 3 months of the date of hire and maintain CPSP certification; Certified in Mental Health first Aid through the State of Montana's eight (8) hour course within 12 months of the date of hire; Certified in Circle of Security within 12 months of the date of hire; Qualified annually to carry Departmentally issued firearm(s).
Special Requirements Must be fingerprinted and a search made of local state and national fingerprint files to disclose any criminal record; Must not have been convicted of a crime for which the person could have been imprisoned in a state or federal penitentiary; Must be of good moral character, as determined by a thorough background investigation.
Physical Demands Must be able to move or lift documents and materials weighting up to 10 pounds, operate standard office equipment, and attend meetings at offsite locations.
Local travel is required but primarily during the business day; occasional out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected.
